A million shades of ugly

I took this from my piece “A Million Pieces of Ugly.” Written for a dear friend, who has been a rock… and also a lone island. I think he is one of the most beautiful people in my life. He has also shown me some of the ugliest parts of myself.

I believe that it is a privilege to know someone well enough, and to be so safe beside them, that during your times of hurt and healing you can be vulnerable, hurt and ugly before them.

It is rare to encounter a true friend who will hold your hand while you fall into pieces on the floor, and not judge. More importantly they will not rebuild you. They will hand you the pieces of your puzzle while you rebuild yourself.

Later they will accept your hand when they feel they are about to collapse.
